My backyard

Save the planet is my cry
Don't let another species die.
Unless, of course, it's in the way
Of building me a place to play.

Not only whales will I protect,
All forms of life deserve respect.
Except the ones I choose to eat.
Don't ask me to give up meat.

Stop development on the coast,
For that's where building hurts the most.
But leave my beachfront lot alone.
Don't you dare touch land I own.

Our wetlands, too, must stay pristine,
To keep our streams and rivers clean.
Let's all protect land owned by you;
Don't think of touching mine, I'll sue.

Collect your plastic, glass and tin.
You don't recycle? That's a sin!
But recycled products I don't buy.
I can't afford to with the price so high.

We consume too much and must reduce
The mounds of trash we all produce.
But don't keep me from filling up
My own disposable coffee cup.

To show the world I really care,
I put Greenpeace stickers everywhere.
Better yet, I only munch,
Ben and Jerry's Rainforest Crunch.

Sometimes I think I don't do enough,
But doing more would be quite tough.
So I toss these thoughts out from my brain
And hope they don't come back again.

The issues that once seemed so clear
Have become quite fuzzy as they drew near.
And I find it's much too hard
To be eco-conscious in my backyard.
